(requires Guild Wars: ‘Factions)
transfer the faction points to it in order to increase your alliance’s prestige.)
Once you reach the point in Guild
Wars: Factions at which you are allowed to join the Luxons or the Kurzicks in their fight against the other faction, you will gain access to special PvP missions called Alliance Battles, which award faction standing with your chosen group as a reward. For example, each kill your team scores on enemy players in the Jade Quarry battle is worth five points Luxon or Kurzick faction, and each victory earns you 3,500 faction. These faction points can be redeemed at special NPCs (Luxon Scavenger or Kurzick Bureaucrat) to receive various rewards. One of those possible rewards is a rare crafting material associated with making armor for your chosen faction: Jadeite Shards for the Luxons and Amber Chunks for the Kurzicks.
So, even though this trick is situational,
it can be very nice to have some of these crafting materials on hand just in case someone with too much money on his hands decides to go into the trade channel and say something like, “WTB Ambers, paying 2.8k for each.”
These rare materials cost 5,000 Luxon
or Kurzick faction apiece. However, depending on demand their value in trades with other players may grow very high. Even during times when the market has a good availability of them, you can usually sell them to the rare material trader for 330 gold or more. That may not sound like much, but if you do lots of Alliance Battles and need to save as much gold as possible, it can add up. (If you are in a good guild/alliance, however, you will probably just want to

The Unofficial Guild Wars Gold Guide
Fortunately, it is now possible to turn
At the time of this writing, Zaishen Keys
one’s PvP fun into gold for one’s roleplaying characters. The best methods for doing this are listed below.
are easily one of the most reliable ways of making money in Guild Wars because the demand for them is so high. (Each one sells for 5k on a good day, or about 4.2k on a day when not as many people are interested in buying them.) The best part is that no tedious farming is involved: simply talk to Tolkano when your Balthazar faction is getting close to its limit, then go to the Great Temple of Balthazar and hop between districts until you find someone paying a good price for them. You may even be able to trade your keys for skill tomes, weapons, or globs of ectoplasm depending on what kinds of players are around.
Zaishen Keys – Up to 7k per hour
(up to 14k per hour during double Balthazar Faction events)
Zaishen Keys are the “zkey” items you
will hear everyone spamming chat about if you spend much time in the Great Temple of Balthazar. A Zaishen Key allows a player to open the Zaishen Chest on the Isle of the Nameless one time. Most of the chest’s rewards are unimpressive–alcohol, for example–but every so often it produces very rare items that already-rich Guild Wars players may desire for any number of reasons. To make money from their desire, you sell Zaishen Keys to them.
The “best” place to get Balthazar faction
will definitely depend on your personal playstyle and what kinds of PvP you enjoy the most. Luxon versus Kurzick battles from the Factions expansion (particularly the Jade Quarry random battle) are often a good pick because they reward 10 faction per kill, with characters and NPCs tending to die a lot while trying to control the special locations on the map. If you decide to take that route, consider combining this method with the crafting material method below in order to further increase how much gold you make per hour.
The most common method for
obtaining a Zaishen Key is to talk to Tolkano (the tournament NPC who appears in the Great Temple of Balthazar, the Hero Battles preparation area, Guild Halls that have purchased him, and in a few other locations as well) and pay him 5,000 Balthazar faction for one. Additionally, if you obtain any Tourmament Reward Points (for example, by participating in the automated tournaments and winning matches) you can trade 5 of those reward points for one zkey.
Jadeite Shards or Amber Chunks – at
least 750g per hour, but up to 5k or more per hour depending on demand

see what parts of your equipment are actually affected by the color from the dye.
Being Patient When
- Remember the above tips concerning
Buying
when to upgrade. One of the best ways to save materials is to avoid upgrading armor until you really need it.
This point is well known, but it deserves
mention here. Because the price of any item sold to trader NPCs varies depending on how frequently other players have purchased or sold that item using a trader, you can save large amounts of gold by waiting for the price to drop before buying popular items.
Using Dyes Effectively
- Until you have your class’s strongest
armor (from crafters in cities like Droknar’s Forge or Kaineng Center), using dyes is typically a waste of money. If you can figure out what color scheme you want to use prior to actually getting the armor, then keep the appropriate dyes in storage and sell the rest to dye traders or other players when prices are up.
If your first character is a Prophecies
Making Gold in PvP
- Remember that you can preview what
Normally, making money through
a mixture of dyes will look like on your armor at any time by double-clicking on any bottle of dye, which will open the armor dye window. The window lets you mix and match up to three bottles of dye at once on a piece of your armor without actually “confirming” anything until you tell the game to do so. This is very helpful to avoid wasted money, and to
participating in PvP does not happen. Your rewards for success in a PvP mission are usually limited to gaining faction with Balthazar (which is most often used to unlock skills, items, and heroes for your account’s PvP characters) and possibly gaining some faction with the Kurzicks or Luxons if you are doing a Factions
alliance battle.

Making the Most of Kits
Glowing Hearts dropped by fire imps; these can be expert salvaged to yield “Lump of Charcoal,” a rare material.
and Materials
- Keep a normal salvage kit on hand for
salvaging low-value wooden weapons and other items that are cluttering your inventory.
Kit Tips:
- Try to use every charge of each kit.
Selling a nearly-depleted kit back to a merchant isn’t cost-effective.
- If you’re collecting Charr Hides in
Ascalon, don’t waste expert salvage charges on them trying to get a “Fur Square.” Due to the low probability of getting a rare material from salvaging, it’s more profitable overall to give four hides to the collector in post-Searing Ascalon City in exchange for a square.
- Late in the PvE Campaigns, avoid
buying Superior Identification Kits and especially Superior Salvage Kits. These 100-charge kits are convenient but cost 25% more gold overall than buying their 25-charge counterparts. The wasted 100g or 400g per Superior Kit can add up to dozens of wasted platinum over time.
- When upgrading your equipment, don’t
forget to expert salvage your old armor to recover runes that were attached to it.
- Not all dropped items with blue or
purple names are actually “unidentified.” Very rarely, such an item will drop without the “unidentified” tag, and using an identification kit will only reveal the item’s value. This is basically a waste of a charge, so make sure the item is actually “unidentified” before using the kit. This happens most commonly in pre-Searing Ascalon.
Material Tips:
- Before you begin selling any of your
crafting materials to a trader or other players, head to an armorer and familiarize yourself with the common and rare components needed for your profession’s armor. Save those types of materials, since you may need them later.
- If you need rare materials in order to
- In general, save expert salvage kit
craft a certain piece of armor, one option is to pay an artisan NPC (in both gold and common materials) to make that rare material. Unfortunately, artisans usually aren’t worth the trouble to find unless the trader price on a rare material you need is
charges for actual salvage items and low-value metal weapons. Those two types of items have a chance to give rare crafting materials when expert salvaged, and most others do not. There are a few exceptions to this rule, such as the

armor. Investing in chest, legs, and head armor first is advisable, though you won’t want to leave your hands and feet unprotected for too much longer, either. Once you have a full set of this armor, outfit it freely with runes and insignias. Once you’ve saved up a lot more money, you can start thinking about “elite” armor (the prettier, more prestigious-looking armor which is, nevertheless, no more effective
you’ll be able to buy the strongest armor for your class. Do so, and feel free to fill it up with all of the runes and insignias you need.
- Once you have a lot of money on
your hands (more than 15k, at least) you can start looking into purchasing “elite” armor, which isn’t any stronger than what you already have, but looks more prestigious. The outposts of Granite Citadel and Marhan’s Grotto (both near Droknar’s Forge) are where you will need to go for that.
- Some of the “elite” 15k armor from
Factions becomes available in the Luxon and Kurzick capital cities, Cavalon and House zu Heltzer, respectively, and can only be purchased if your current unspent faction points with that group are higher than your faction points for the other.
Factions:
- Due to the fast-paced nature of the
early part of the Factions campaign, you should be able to make it through all of the quests and missions on Shing Jea Island using just your starting armor. Exception: If your profession forces you to fight near the enemies (warrior or assassin, for example), investing in chest and leg armor from Shing Jea Monastery will be worthwhile, since these spots are the most likely to be hit in typical combat situations.
- The other “elite” armor from Factions
is available from crafters in the Divine Path explorable area, which you will end up in after completing the final mission of the campaign. It has no other special requirements for purchasing.
- Once you reach Kaineng Center,
you’ll have access to crafters who can make the strongest armor. If you’ve been saving your gold and materials (or if you have a stock of them in storage from one of your Prophecies characters), this will be a good time to get a full set of new

Gold Savers
crafters in the area. Only buy from Corwen, who sells the stronger and more expensive armor of the two.
- Don’t bother buying any more armor
This brief section of the guide is
until you reach Bergen Hot Springs (in Kryta), and even then, there’s no need to upgrade unless you’re having problems surviving.
designed to help you stretch your gold as far as it can go. By being careful with your money, you can save for more expensive items while still equipping your character adequately for the tasks at hand.
- For owners of Factions only:
Alternatively, when you reach Lion’s Arch, you can talk to Firstwatch Sergio and complete his “Brother Mhenlo’s Request” quest in order to gain access to the continent of Cantha and the city zone Kaineng Center. In Kaineng, you’ll be able to craft armor that’s just as powerful as the sets you would be able to get in Droknar’s Forge much later. Doing this will provide all of the equipment you need for the rest of the game. For help with affording this expensive armor so early, consider farming the nearby D’Alessio Seaboard mission for materials (see section 2.4) and using the Factions newbie questing trick to gather the gold (see section 3.1).
Knowing When to
Upgrade
One of the easiest ways to make your
gold go as far as it can is to know when to upgrade your equipment. Small upgrades, especially in terms of armor, are usually far more expensive than they are worth.
Prophecies:
- Don’t stress too much over getting all
- When you reach the Henge of Denravi,
of the armor you can from the Collectors in pre-Searing. It’s a nice bonus, but the meager armor boost won’t help that much and may be a waste of time if you have to go out of your way to collect the items.
you’ll probably be tempted to upgrade right away. If possible, wait again; if you can wait two more missions, you’ll be in Amnoon Oasis, which has superior armor.
- When you reach Amnoon Oasis, you’ll
probably need to upgrade in order to get through the Crystal Desert missions.
- When you get to post-Searing
Ascalon City, there will be two armor

can say in the trade channel that you want to buy a certain tradable item for some price that’s less than what the trader would pay and see if anyone offers to sell. This trick works best if you already have a copy of the item in question so that you can request an exact sale quote for it.
This tactic is often considered
dishonourable because it directly takes advantage of other players’ ignorance. Even so, anyone trying to save a large sum of gold should be aware of this tactic, if only to protect themselves from being exploited by it.

The Unofficial Guild Wars Gold Guide
Comparing Merchant
selling the unsalvaged item to a merchant than you would by salvaging the rune first.
and Trader Prices
This probably sounds very strange, but
look at this example: an identified salvage item “of Superior Water Magic” might sell to a merchant for ~200g, even though the salvaged rune would only sell for 25g to a merchant or ~50g to a rune trader (because not many players buy that time of rune). This mainly applies to salvage items containing Major or Superior Runes, since Minor Runes attached to salvage items typically don’t add enough value to make a large difference in price.
Most of the time, the gold you would
get by selling an item to a normal merchant is less than you would get by selling the same item to an appropriate trader. Dyes always sell for 1g to merchants but sell much better to traders. Runes sell for roughly 25g to merchants but may sell for much more to traders. Finally, crafting materials nearly always sell for more to traders than to merchants.
So, as a rule, selling items to an
Comparing NPC and
appropriate trader is better than selling them to a merchant. But like most rules, this rule has an exception. From post-Searing Ascalon onward, you will begin finding salvage items with purple- and yellow-colored text, which indicate high rarity. If you identify them, chances are good that they will contain a rune of some attribute. If the rune wouldn’t be useful to you, and if you don’t want to spend time trying to sell it to a player, then don’t expert-salvage the item immediately. Instead, see how much gold a merchant would give you for the salvage item. Now go to a rune trader and see what the last sale price of the rune was. If it’s only around 25g, you will probably make better money by
Player Prices: the Fast
Re-sell Trick
Since the in-game economy fluctuates so
much, players auctioning off dyes, runes, or crafting materials may sometimes offer to sell items to other players for less than an NPC trader would pay. If you see a player auctioning tradable items at bargain prices, you can send a /whisper expressing interest and go check the trader to see if the selling price on that item is high. If it is, you may be able to make a quick profit by buying the item off that player and then reselling it to the trader. Alternatively, you

possible. Not only does each district represent a unique group of players, it also represents a unique marketplace. In one district, you might find someone willing to pay well for that dye you picked up on the last mission, while in another, you might find someone paying handsomely for a certain type of crafting material.
Economy to Your
Advantage
Whether you actively farm or simply
have a large inventory of tradable goods from casual play in the main storyline, you’ll want to make sure you get the most gold for your items. This section is devoted to doing just that.
In order to get in touch with as many
players as possible, auction your loot in one district of a town and then immediately switch to another district. Hold shift and hit the up arrow key while your chat bar is open to instantly retype your auction message, and then hit enter to send it in the new district. Repeat this process until you start getting whispers expressing interest in the item(s). You can even try moving from town to town if simply switching districts isn’t enough.
District Hopping
One of the curious things about Guild
Wars is that its towns are divided into “districts” in order to keep lag to a minimum. While this districting system limits lag, it also limits the number of players that any single message in the trade channel can reach. Whether you’re looking to sell common items to other players or trying to find the highest bid on, say, a max damage sword with 15% damage while health is above 50% and a skill requirement of 9, only being able to speak to a single district at a time can seem like a hindrance.
Note: since NPC trader prices are the
same everywhere at any given time, district hopping won’t help you find a better deal with the NPCs. This method is just for dealing with player characters.
In fact, districting can become one of
the best tools in your arsenal if you’re looking to make as much gold as
